Maths Centre started a national calculators programme in its primary and
high schools at the beginning of 2002. Over 2 300 calculators were distributed
in 6 districts with a generous donation from the Zenex Foundation, UBS,
DG Murray and the Business Trust.
The schools that the Maths Centre is involved in are often located in the
most remote rural areas. Communities are heavily affected by poor socio-economic
conditions. Many learners in these areas depend on grandparents' subsistence/pension
for their schooling needs. These conditions have a bearing on the learners'
ability to purchase any valuable resources for learning mathematics such
as calculators.
Learners often borrow calculators from wherever they can. Some learners
only start to use a calculator in Grade 12, or even worse, just before the
exam day, thus missing out on the opportunity of acquiring valuable skills
that could make the difference between passing or failing the final exam.
The Grade 12 Maths Paper 2 requires the use of a calculator. The donated
calculators along with the training provided by the Maths Centre have gone
a long way in assisting learners to develop calculator skills. Learners
will now be able to attempt questions that previously were left unanswered. |
