Many teacher-training programmes of the past have been inadequate to meet the demands of the revised national curriculum. Interventions such as those of the Maths Centre provided a lifeline for teachers presenting them with a practical way of understanding the principles of Outcomes Based Education. The interventions have initiated a change. This is most evident in the following:
- Increasingly less use of chalkboard teaching and authoritarian methods of maintaining discipline
- The provision of environments of numeracy
- The introduction of stimulating maths resources.
Whether the teachers are aware of it or not, the interventions have initiated a paradigm shift that is gradually becoming internalised. Although many may be struggle at this stage, several teachers exhibited the potential to become agents of change.
There is evidence to show that there has been some improvement in teaching and learning practices as a result of project intervention both in Mpumalanga project schools. It should be acknowledged at the outset that the targeted teachers and schools involved in this initiative have gained considerable professional experience in an intensive, focused, and highly resourced manner during the lifespan of the projects.
Teachers have had the opportunity to develop skills in the teaching of mathematics through the completion of a formal qualification as well as through on-site support visits to their classrooms
