Take a Girl Child to Work Day 2008
Maths Centre Incorporating Sciences has participated in the Take a Girl Child to Work Day (29 May 2008), Cell C’s very successful workplace exposure initiative, for the sixth year in a row. A fun filled day was planned for the 18 girls visiting Maths Centre Head Office in Johannesburg.

The girls were exposed to variety of activities that Maths Centre trainers, as a service provider for Maths, Science, Technology and Entrepreneurship Education, deals with on a daily basis.

Learner and Teacher Support Materials donated
Leanne Barlett was instrumental in the arrangements to dispatch a large consignment of Learners and Teacher Support Material (LSM) from Sawtry Community College (UK) to Maths Centre.
Books from the consignment were distributed to Maths Centre Provincial offices to be used by field trainers and teachers in schools. In all Maths Centre offices field trainers use the books as a resource to plan for interventions in schools. In most centres the textbooks are available to be used by teachers at any time for their preparations of learning experiences.
Diepsloot Combined school in Gauteng Province received a set of textbooks for each grade for their library. This school is in an informal settlement. Their supplier has as yet not delivered LSM to the school. Each matriculant received an Algebra textbook from the cosignment of books.
A box with graphical calculators that was also part of the consignment, is now being used by Maths Centre field trainers during Maths and Science teacher workshops. Four sets of claculators that can be used on overhead projectors were distributed umongst Maths Centre high school projects, to be used during Maths Centre interventions.
The textbooks are of great help in all the grades with challenging activities within different contexts that the learners can engage in.

On behalf of all the Maths Centre trainers, teachers and learners benefiting from this generous gesture, a big thank you to Leanne and the Sawtry Community College in the UK!
