On Friday, 19 March 2010, Symphony Primary celebrated the launch of their fabulous Numeracy Hub. In its capacity as a Hub, it will serve as a nerve centre for numeracy / mathematics development for all phases in primary schools, in the District North Region of the Western Cape. Symphony Primary has made tremendous progress and has given excellent support and co-operation to Maths Centre.
Their efforts at numeracy murals, 3D numeracy artwork, colourful ground paintings including numeracy games and even a 2010 soccer field has been phenomenal. These numeracy creations are as a result of their excellent teamwork and overwhelming spirit which is a rare find in this day and age. These efforts have been made by the entire academic and non-academic members of staff, who have put in many hours of hard work to create such a haven for Numeracy. Since the inception of the project, the principal and educators of this school have taken ownership from day one. Thereafter, they worked diligently and closely with me and at times surpassed themselves to meet the objectives of the project. Furthermore, classroom visits and lesson monitoring have proven to be successful in capturing learners’ attention and ensuring that, whilst learning takes place, the fun and enthusiasm in it, is maintained. Despite the challenges they face, learners have equally rose to the occasion in their efforts. Educators have adopted Maths Centre’s methodologies with ease. Resources supplied are used effectively. Hence, it is not surprising that results have subsequently improved. Symphony Primary has made steady and all round improvement in Numeracy results.
Due to their efforts, the school has successfully secured sponsorships of a banner for the Numeracy Hub, books and literature, as well as computers from Coca-Cola, Schuters, Oxford Publishers and Tygerberg High School, respectively.
