| Activity 12 from the Engineering Kit was used by Inyathi learners to learn how structures can be reinforced. |
The project was launched in 2009 in the Northern Cape, North West, Mpumalanga and Eastern Cape. During the launch teachers raised the following concerns:
- Teachers are not professionally qualified to teach technology
- Language is a barrier to learning
- Some principals may not support the project
- Lack of resources
The project’s intervention was in the form of teacher workshops. The workshops covered all areas in the Technology teaching area, ranging from planning for teaching and learning, content based workshops, classroom support visits to the technology olympiads.
Through these activities teachers realised the need to improve their qualification in Technology. Most teachers have since enrolled for ACE with various institutions.
The Technology Olympiad afforded learners an opportunity to interact with others about their models, thus improving their ability to express themselves in English. Learners are also exposed to understanding the “how” of how things are done using the concepts of technology.
The involvement of principals makes it possible for the field trainers to monitor and support teachers and learners with ease.
Learning facilitators are also involved in the project. This makes it possible for teachers to develop in technology and therefore learners learning through interventions.
The Engineering Kit that was supplied to the project schools by Maths Centre encourages the teachers to teach the learning area with confidence. The teachers use the pre-planned activities in the kit not only as a means to introduce new concepts to the learners, but also as examples of how they can create new activities for the learners.
