In a time where grade 12 results are rather grim, the performance of the Transnet Sharp Minds! Learners are a bright beacon.
During 2007 Transnet Foundation selected four hundred learners to attend remedial lessons in Maths, Science and English in the following Provinces:
- North West - Moretele
- Limpopo - Sekhukhune
- KZN - Mtubatuba
- Free State - Maluti A Phofung
Intensive training started in 2008 and ran over a 2 year cycle. Maths Centre trainers worked intensively with the learners during Saturday schools and afternoon clinics as well as content workshops for the teachers.
The first group of Sharp Minds! Learners completed Grade 12 end of 2009. On 19 January 2010 Transnet Foundation held a splendid prize-giving event to celebrate their achievements.
- An overall pass rate of 92%.
- Out of 367 learners, 103 achieved distinctions in Maths, Science and English and 83 distinctions in other learning areas.
- 13 learners from Maluti A Phofung ranked among the top 100 learners in the Free State.
