On 23 May 2012 the KZN Powertech Transformers project's Science learners, with the guidance of their teachers and Maths Centre trainer, won a competition on environmental awareness which was organised and sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology in conjunction with the eThekwini municipality.

The learners had to run research projects on saving electricity through converting solar energy to electrical energy and investigating the variations of LED brightness with current. Of the 19 high schools that entered the competition, Dumehlezi High School and Phembisizwe High School (both Powertech Transformers schools) achieved 1st place in their respective categories. Each school won a desktop computer and 15 scientific calculators.
