Together with our funders, TWP and UBS who are committed to supporting educational developemnt in South Africa, DirectFlo representative, Maths Centre TMRDU staff and 20 ECD practitioners/teachers, Maths Centre formally launched the ECD project at the Maths Centre head office in Braamfontein, Johannesburg which commenced in February 2012. This year long project is to equip 11 ECD practitioners/teachers from Soweto and 9 practtioners/teachers from Alexandra with an accredited ECD Level 4 course. Direct Flo, our accredited partners, are also committed in ensuring that this project runs successfully.
The afternoon started with Maths Centre's National Executive Director, Sharanjeet Shan, highlighting some pertinent issues facing our children in the future and the dire need for ECD practitioners to ensure they are well equipped to adjust to our changing world and the pace of the technological era we live in. She emphasised that "South Africa has no future without securing the future of its children. We have to believe that our children are capable of learning absolutely everything given the right direction, learning opportunities and teaching. It is not open for debate." She then went on to talk about school readiness, child development and parental involvement. The culmination of the talk was the pivotal role these ECD practitioenrs/teachers played in these childrens lives. She then showed a very thought provoking video which left all the guests shocked regarding the future of our children.
The ECD Practitioners/teachers then signed MOU's pledging their commitment to the project. Mavis, one of the ECD Practitioners from Alexnadra Little Eagles Day care, expressed her heartfelt thanks to the funders and Maths Centre for giving them this opportunity to further their education.
| Lesego Godana from UBS said that they have been funding projects with Maths Centre for the past 12 years and she was exhilarated when the ECD project came on board. She has realised with her research on ECD and working at an ECD centre for a short period of time how we as adults need to understand these children and their needs. She also congratulated the ECD practitioners/teachers selected and motivated them to do well in their studies. |
