The Cell C Grade 11 Technology Challenge was a special Technology programme initiated by Cell C. This programme took place within the national Maths Centre / Cell C project in the Eastern Cape Province.
It started when Cell C asked Maths Centre to develop a technology challenge for Grade 11 girls participating in the Cell C project.

Scenario: Nwabisa is working as a house keeper for Ntando, who is deaf and Thando, who is blind. Every time she has to shout at the gate for someone to open for her. Most of the time they cannot hear her because of their conditions and that the gate is a bit far from the house. She retuned home one morning because no one could hear her shout from the gate.
Design brief: Design, build and demonstrate a communication device for Nwabisa to communicate with Ntando and Thando so that they can be able to open the gate for her in the morning when coming to work.

Twelve schools, 3 from East London, 7 from PE and 2 from Uitenhage took part in the challenge.
The finals were held on the 1st October 2011 at Sanctor High School in Port Elizabeth. The girls demonstrated the performance of their models and presented to the judges during their interviews. Judges looked at how Mathematics and Science were applied during the making of the models.

The second prize winners were girls from Khumbulani High and the third prize went to Nyameko High School.
The Best Presentation Award went to Power Buzz of Sanctor High School. The Best Use of Material Award went to Tel Alert of Gelvandale High school.
