The Shell Rally to Numeracy project launch was held on 18 August 2011 at Glen Ash Combined School. The aim was to introduce the project properly to all the stakeholders, which includes the Department of Education, on both provincial and district level, principals as well as educators of the 10 schools that are in the project.
Sharanjeet Shan, Maths Centre's National Executive Director, opened the day with a thought provoking presentation whereby she frankly told the educators of the role they are suppose to play in their classes. She encouraged them to make the classroom a safe haven for learners to be themselves. She said that teachers should build learners' confidence and pride. They should also be encouraged to know more about their history.
Sinenhlanhla Melane from Shell said that they are funding the project for three years (2011–2013) and has in conjunction with the relevant stakeholders set the standards that teachers have to achieve. As a company in the petroleum industry it expects to have their future employees from present learners who are good in Mathematics, Physical Science and Technology. The future of these learners can only be shaped by teachers, hence the sponsorship to develop teachers.
The Free State Department of Education representative, Mrs. B. Tshabalala (Director - GET Schools) said all learners can do mathematics even though they perform at different levels and it is the duty of educators to ensure that their potential is developed to the fullest. The Department of Education is embarking on a "Maths for All" campaign and projects like this will help learners improve their performance.
