One might assume that interventions done by Maths Centre ends once a project has completed its cycle, but this is not the case for two of the learners who were beneficiaries of the SASIX project.
Lehlomela Motsoaledi (19) first year Civil Engineer student at Jeppe College and Nkosinathi Hlongwane (19) first year IT student at PC training college together with a friend Smangaliso Dlamini (19) second year Visual Communication student at the University of Johannesburg started going around schools in Soweto motivating learners in a seminar which they call the "University of Life". They feel that the SASIX project through the Maths Centre has helped them understand the gift of giving to the less fortunate, and feel that through sharing their experiences and what drives them, will motivate learners to take their studies seriously.
They felt that if learners are not going to get extra support in Mathematics and Science, the University of Life will be just what they need to succeed. Young people volunteering to be their mentors, motivating them and asking them to use this opportunity to change the way they see the world. They should stop being victims and start seeing themselves as winners.
Through these three young men and their enthusiasm about the University of Life, they have pulled in three ladies; Busisiwe Nyembe (22) studying towards a BA in Teaching majoring in Mathematics and Psychology, Happy Ndaba (23) studying a BA in teaching majoring in English and Psychology at the university of Johannesburg and Lerato Kgatla (21) Research and Development assistant at the Maths Centre and studying towards a BA in Communication Science and Public Administration came together at Emshukantambo secondary on the 18 August 2011, speaking to Grade 12 learners.
The day was scheduled in such a way that it does not disrupt the school and learning. This was done by attending to learners during their life orientation period.
Learners were very inspired by a Grade 12 learner that said "I liked the way they were so realistic, because they talked about what we do and I also liked the words of encouragement. They really inspired me"
Comment from a leaner:
This goes to show that young people appreciate other young people talking to them about life's lessons, understanding that leaners needs mentors in their lives. They need people who will help them grow and most importantly, giving without expecting anything in return.
