The Maths Centre's KZN office was invited by the Ugu District Department of Education to address invitees on the role played by the Maths Centre in supporting schools to improve their results. Principals, HOD's, educators and DoE officials were present.
This opportunity was seized with open arms as it afforded the Centre an opportunity to highlight its jubilee year. The Dududu Ward Manager, Dr. J. Naidoo, thanked all invited guests for their presence. He highlighted the role played by NGO's in the lives of learners at disadvantaged schools. The Department has limited financial resources and any support from NGO's, like the Maths Centre, was truly appreciated.
The Maths Centre's KZN Provincial Manager, Annamalay Pillay, addressed the guests and explained the profile of the Maths Centre. The Maths Centre menu of services and the learner-teacher-support material that was on sale was mentioned. The difference that Maths Centre is making in the Province was highlighted. He cited examples of learner achievements from the Cell C project that was run in the province last year. Many learners achieved level 7 passes. He reminded the guests that total support from all stakeholders always leads to success. Maths Centre's Nkululeko thereafter addressed the guests on the Maths Centre's model of intervention. He explained how learning gaps increased each year and if not tackled immediately, led to disastrous Matric results. The success of keeping learner records of achievement was also highlighted.

Mr. Faizel Dawood from the Zembeni Education Centre explained the role that they could provide as support structures to any intervention strategy. The Education Centre committed itself to assisting educators with running out learner support materials. Ms. Sindi Zakuza CES GET Phase thereafter addressed the members present. She acknowledged the work conducted by NGO's like the Maths Centre. She stated that the Department had limited funds available and schools that receive help from NGO's should count themselves as being "blessed". The subject advisors have too many schools to support and it would be impossible to visit all schools in one year. Luckily project schools have a project trainer assigned to them that can provide constant support. The LTSM provided will also help to strengthen the lesson delivery. She implored total commitment from all parties.
