Maths Centre North West was invited to present a workshop for Foundation Phase educators at the AMESA Congress in Taungon. The theme for the Congress was: "Mathematics: A tool for everyone". Charmaine Steenkamp (Field Trainer-Northern Cape) represented the Centre at the congress and also presented the workshop. She presented alongside Ms. O Hebe who is Senior Education Specialist- Foundation Phase Maths at Maquassi Hills Area Office.
The content covered in the workshops focused on Space and Shape. Special focus was put on the following:
- Recognise, identify and name two-dimensional shapes and 3-D objects in the classroom and in pictures, including:
- Boxes (prisms), balls (spheres) and cylinders
- Triangles, squares and rectangles
- Circles
- Cones and pyramids
The conference was an eye opener in the sense that it is clear that Maths Centre has a major role to play in improving Maths in the country.
