It is firmly believed at the Maths Centre that every innovation within a school challenges the whole school, whether the focus of intervention is subject-based or school development. In order to maximize effectiveness of teaching and learning programmes, Maths Centre conducted a whole school development workshop.
The workshop was conducted by the Maths Centre CEO Ms. Sharanjeet Shan on 4 May 2011 at Molomoatau High School. The workshop was attended by Masemola District Senior Manager, Mr TG Nkadimeng, Maths Centre provincial manager Mrs. Mapula Phooko, Maths Centre staff, Engen funding partners Mr. Haroon Motalib, and principals of the schools that are participating in the Engen funded project.
Among the factors which were discussed are:
- School management and leadership - Does the school have a clear vision statement? Does the school have aims? Is the whole school community aware of these aims and were they involved in the process of formulation of aims?
- Teaching styles - educator-directed lessons, chalk and talk, constructivist or instructive, group work, project work, learner choice or educator choice.
- Learning styles - Do learners take responsibility for their own learning such as setting targets and understand their own difficulties? Do learning opportunities cater for the various temperaments in the classroom, including: creative, competitive, cooperation, slow learner and gifted learners? Are there measures in place to celebrate success of all kinds?
The principals were given opportunity to participate and raise questions on whole school development policies that they have in place. Ms. Sharanjeet Shan encouraged participants to implement policies regardless of the challenges that the school might be faced with. Principals were also given a task to encourage their learners to pass their Maths and Science in level 6 and 7, as bursaries are available for well performing learners.

Mr. TG Nkadimeng was pleased to see the impact of the project since it started. 2011 grade 12 results were the highlight as most of the school that performed well in Maths and Science are part of the Engen funded project. All the principals present were encouraged to advise their educators to seek help if they are struggling with content.
