Maths Centre has been commissioned by Trudon, the publishers of the Yellow Pages, to intervene in educator and learner performance in pure Mathematics and Physical Science in 10 semi-functional schools in Soshanguve. The 10 schools are from a previously disadvantaged community.
The intervention project will run for the period of three years, starting from March 2011 to February 2013.The project will mainly focus on:
ensuring curriculum coverage in each grade;
improving teacher's conceptual knowledge in Mathematics and Physical Science;
improving management and delivery of Teaching, Learning and Assessment;
Instigating a Learner Progression Programme.
"Our ultimate goal is to see an increase in the numbers of learners passing Maths and Science at the end of their high school career" said Trudon Marketing General Manager Lionel Smith at the project launch in Tshwane North on 19 April 2011. The launch was attended by Trudon Marketing General Manager, Lionel Smith and Corporate Social Investment Manager, Clarrisa Smith, the Maths Centre CEO, Sharanjeet Shan, the Maths Centre Provincial Manager for Gauteng, Richard Buhali and other Maths Centre staff, Dr. Rashida Mahomed and Mr. K. Molebaloa from the Department of Education, the principals and the Maths and Science teachers of the selected high schools.
The high schools selected to benefit from the intervention projects are Amogelang, Botse-Botse, Elizabeth Matsemela, Hlanganani, Kgomotso, Lethabong, Makhosini, Memezelo, Senthibele and Soshanguve.
The picture on the right shows the learning materials received by the schools. The learning material includes study guides, dictionary, calculators, mathematics instruments and Science kits.
The district officials, school principals and the teachers all welcomed the programme and are looking forward to learners' improved results in Mathematics and Physical Science.
