In his welcome address, Johan Furter, Managing Director of Sasol Infrachem, emphasized the importance of producing responsible learners with good results in mathematics and physical science who can be given appropriate training to fill skill gap existing in the job market.
Pamilla Mudhray, Sasol Corporate Social Investment Manager says, “The programme has been challenging and effective, and we wanted to motivate and reward learners, teachers and schools who have truly demonstrated excellence, discipline, teamwork and results. The programme has been valuable in that it provides resources and helps to stick to the curriculum, and the Awards are a great motivational tool.”
“We will continue working hard with the Maths Centre, and the more assistance I receive the more learners I can impact, year after year.” says maths teacher Henry Nkosi from Barnard Molokoane High School.
Maths Centre National Director Sharanjeet Shan says “All participating schools in 2007 showed improved results at all levels, with Grade 11 results in both Maths and Science increasing by over 10%. Several distinctions were achieved in matric for Standard and Higher grades. Our teacher development programme component is vital to ensure sustainability, and 30 of the high-performing teachers have been selected to start a B Ed education degree through Nelson Mandela University during 2008." |
